A USB connection for iPad

For all who have ever wished for a USB connection to their iPad or other iDevice, there is good news. And no, there isn’t a new generation of these devices with a USB port. Although, that would certainly be nice. The best hope for connecting via USB to an iPad is the i-FlashDrive. The i-FlasDrive is actually a dongle with a USB connector on one side and an Apple connector on the other end. This device is thought to be the first two-way communication device for the iPhone or iPad. Of course you’ll need to download an app to do it, but it’s a free app. With the i-FlashDrive you can send and receive photos, music and other files. The USB flash drive storage capacity runs from 8GB up to 32GB but you’ll have to pay nearly $100 for the 8GB and it goes up from there. On the upside, if it’s options you’re after, now you have one. Well you can pre-order one.

A portable office through apps

LibreOffice practically means “free” office. With the release of LibreOffice Portable, brings you the freedom of an office in a portable app. Put it on the storage medium of your choice, be it a USB flash drive, some other solid state drive or something else. LibreOffice has a word processor, a spreadsheet, drawing package, database and presentation tool. Plans are in place for this portable app to be the default office suite in upcoming versions of Linux. However, it doesn’t matter what format your files are in, LibreOffice can import and export documents from other formats such as Microsoft Word. While the reviews are generally positive, experts are upset that the spreadsheet doesn’t include all Excel functions. In our case, we’re always looking to bring you the expanding possibilities with portable apps because portability translates to more freedom with your USB drives.

USB 3.0 for speedy delivery

Recognizing that USB 2.0 drives are not even as fast as conventional hard drives, the Gods of USB initiated a move toward USB 3.0, covered here earlier. This new standard was most notable for its tenfold boost in transfer speed. All of a sudden, it seemed that owners of USB flash drives wouldn’t have to sit around and twiddle their thumbs waiting for their thumbdrives to get the job done. And this was good news for all who lived, worked and played in the world of USB. But now, friends of USB 3.0 are growing restless because USB 3.0 adoption just isn’t happening as quickly as it ought to. What this means is that even as PC manufacturers are getting on board, so to speak, with USB 3.0 support, the big chipmakers haven’t been as robust in delivering to the USB 3.0 front. Not to worry though because most devices are backwards compatible. Still, there is good news on the horizon, if only the horizon would get here quickly. With USB 3.0 at its best, we can expect to be able to transfer a 27GB hi-def movie in about a minute.
