What does the European Union (EU)
Common Charger Directive mean for the Promotional USB Industry?
The EU Common Charger Directive in simple layman terms is the drive to reduce e-waste and resources associated with different digital device charging methods. A so called “one charger to rule them all!”
One Charger To Rule them All
Enter USB – C or Type C depending on your preference.
There are lots of ins and outs but the gist is Apple devices will be forced to use Type C USB ports for charging. This means iPhones, iPads and Macbooks will all be ditching their lighting ports and making the switch to USB-C
The unification will likely intensify the USB Promotional Printing and Duplication service providers move to from USB A (the defacto standard for decades at this point) to USB C flash drives.
For USB printing and data loading service bureaus like us that print and duplicate USB drives that means updating the USB duplicators we use to data load from ones with Type A inputs to ones with Type C inputs. This can be accomplished via two methods: purchasing new stand alone duplicators or purchasing small conversion cables.
For our customers it means they’ll likely need to choose USB-C Flash Drives or the Dual Mode “OTG” style Flash Drives that feature both a Type A and a Type C end.
